Hepatite Hepatitis E

Hepatitis E is usually a benign disease, but can sometimes lead to serious complications that may be fatal (particularly in susceptible populations, such as pregnant women or individuals with liver disease). ANSES was asked in 2009 to assess the role of certain food products in its transmission. It published several opinions and scientific assessment of the risks related to the hepatitis E virus.

Amiante Contribution to reforming the early retirement scheme for asbestos workers

In 1999 the French authorities established a specific early retirement scheme for persons having worked with asbestos (CAATA) further to the health crisis surrounding exposure of workers to asbestos. As part of the reform of this scheme, ANSES received a formal request to prepare a summary of the available data on occupational exposure to asbestos and specifically to identify occupations with a high level of exposure.

Nutrition labelling

Nutrition labelling of food concerns all the information appearing on a product’s packaging relating to its energy and nutrient content. It is a tool to help consumers in their food choices that also supports public health policy measures with regard to nutrition. How can this information be made reliable, useful and easy to understand for everyone? A regulation that has been applicable in Europe since 2011 stipulates the nutrition information to be included on the label, and the form in which it should be presented to consumers (positioning, size, presentation, etc.).

Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals: REACh

On 1 June 2007, the REACh Regulation entered into force. It aims to improve our understanding of the effects of chemicals on human health and the environment, in order to effectively manage the risks associated with the use of these products.

Laboratoires ANSES laboratories

ANSES has a network of nine reference and research laboratories located throughout France, close to industry. These laboratories operate in three main areas: animal health and welfare, food safety (chemical and microbiological) and plant health. They are internationally recognised in their respective fields of expertise: epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial resistance, toxins and physico-chemical contaminants. Thanks to their work in providing expertise, epidemiological monitoring, alerts and scientific and technical assistance, they play a vital role in understanding various threats and in collecting data from the network of accredited laboratories.

Carbone Carbon composites

A composite material is formed from several components, including a reinforcement (carbon fibres, in this case) and a matrix (typically a thermoplastic or thermosetting resin). The use of composite materials is highly diverse. At the request of the General Confederation of Labour (CGT) in France, the Agency assessed the health risks associated with the manufacture and machiningof carbon composites across all sectors using these materials, and made recommendations to improve the prevention of occupational risks.

Scanner Body Scanners

Following the attempted attack on a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit in December 2009, the French Interior Security Council called for the rapid installation of millimetre wave body scanners (24 - 30 GHz) in French airports for checking passengers. The Agency received two formal requests, in 2010 and 2012, to assess the potential health risks associated with these devices. It has issued a series of recommendations concerning all millimetre wave body scanners.

Assessment of the risks associated with carbon nanotubes

Among the many available manufactured nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes are of particular interest because of their wide range of potential industrial applications and their exceptional properties. However, there is concern regarding the toxicity of some of these nanotubes. In 2007, the Agency received a formal request to perform an expert appraisal of the risk assessment for nanostructured materials, particularly those with carbon nanotubes in their composition. A research and development programme has been launched with the aim of creating a manufacturing sector for these materials. Financial support for this programme is partially subject to the requirement for the industrial consortium to provide an assessment of the health and environmental risks associated with manufactured carbon nanotubes. The Agency has already published two opinions and a report on this topic. A third and final expert appraisal is planned for 2013.

Eaux Usées Assessment of the health risks related to the presence of microorganisms in water intended for human consumption

The microbiological pathogens that may be present in water intended for human consumption (WIHC) are mainly bacteria, viruses and protozoa, most of which come from human or animal excrement. Their presence in tap water is due to insufficient protection of the supply, a defect in water treatment or a backflow of wastewater into the drinking water system. They can cause infectious disease (primarily acute gastroenteritis in mainland France), and they are the primary short-term health risk related to contamination of drinking water.

Mycotoxines Review of mycotoxins

Mycotoxins are produced by certain moulds or fungi on cereal crops during growth or during storage. Over 300 have been identified, but only around 30 are sufficiently toxic to be of concern for humans or animals.
