Update on the assessment and authorisation of veterinary vaccines

Veterinary vaccines protect animals both individually and collectively against diseases caused by viral, bacterial or parasitic pathogens and, in the case of zoonoses, prevent the risk of transmission to humans. Their authorisation by the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) is subject to the same strict requirements as for human vaccines. It takes account of quality, efficacy and safety criteria, for animals as well as for users and consumers of animal products.

Assessment of commercial plant protection preparations prior to marketing

Since June 2011, plant protection preparations are no longer assessed by each Member State, but according to geographical zone (of which there are three in Europe). In France, ANSES is the organisation responsible for conducting a scientific assessment of marketing authorisation applications for crop treatment products. Each year, ANSES examines a total of nearly 2000 dossiers, over 300 of which concern applications for marketing authorisation for a new product, or for the 10-year renewal of an existing product’s authorisation, after review. As of 1 July 2015, ANSES has become the competent authority for issuing marketing authorisations for plant protection products and their adjuvants.  Guidelines have been established by the Agency that set out the criteria to be taken into account in the decision-making process for marketing authorisations, based on the results of scientific assessments, and in compliance with the requirements of the European regulations.

Tool for control banding the risks associated with nanomaterials

The properties of manufactured nanomaterials pave the way for a great variety of promising technological developments. However, there are many uncertainties involved in making a quantitative assessment of the hazards of and exposures to nanomaterials, which will only be resolved gradually through progress in scientific knowledge of their properties and associated hazards.ANSES is applying considerable resources to addressing these issues, and in 2010 producedan expert report on the development of a control banding tool for specific risks in the case of nanomaterials.

Biocides Assessing the Risks of Ethanol

Ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, is found in many common consumer products. It also has many uses in work environments (fuels, solvents, disinfectants). Although the risks associated with alcohol consumption (ingestion) are well known, those resulting from inhalation of ethanol vapour and/or from skin contact are not. Therefore, the Agency has assessed the risks resulting from inhalation of ethanol vapour and/or from skin contact for the general population and in the workplace.

Eau Virus H1N1 virus and wastewater

The World Health Organization declared the occurrence of a human influenza pandemic due to the Influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus on 11 June 2009. France had been preparing for this eventuality for several years, particularly through the French plan to prevent and control an influenza pandemic. At that time, the Agency was requested to assess the risks to workers, associated with the presence of the InfluenzaA (H1N1)2009 pandemic virus in wastewater.

Wastewater may contain pathogenic microorganisms and/or chemicals that are a risk for human health. Consequently it must be collected and treated before it can be discharged into the natural environment. In this context, ANSES provides support to the authorities in order to assess the health risks associated with sensitive uses (swimming, shellfish farming) located downstream of sewage discharges, it issues Opinions on projects to build sewage plants or on the discharges originating from them, and it produces expert appraisals (upon request by the supervisory authorities) on the effectiveness of non-mains wastewater treatment systems.

Water is essential for the human body to function properly which is why so much importance is given to water supply and water quality. Surface waters and groundwater are the main sources used to provide tap water, or municipal water,  to the public. Tap water is treated to ensure compliance with about 60 microbiological, physico-chemical, radiological and organoleptic parameters described in European regulations which are transposed into national law. The extent of water treatment depends on the quality of the resource with the aim of eliminating pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites, chemical contaminants including for example pesticides and nitrates, and excess mineral salts like fluoride and sodium, among others.

Piscine Health risks associated with swimming pools for collective use

In France, bathing is the most common water-based recreational activity. The three main types of areas for bathing and related activities are 1) public swimming pools, in which the water is disinfected and provided with disinfectant properties so as to ensure its compliance with microbiologic standards, 2) natural bathing sites which sometimes benefit from specific improvements for the general public, but whose water is not treated and 3) artificial bathing sites.
