Noise is one of the most common forms of environmental pollution reported by the population, but aside from deafness, the other health effects that it causes are not well known or properly taken into account. In 2003, given public interest in this area and further to a formal request from the public authorities, ANSES published a report on the health effects of noise.

Opinion surveys show that the French population attaches special and increasing importance to the right to a noise-free environment. However, the population still does not consider the effects of noise on health to be a major concern. Noise is seen more as a disturbance, a nuisance, or even as environmental pollution, rather than a real risk for health. It does not create the same concerns as other environmental risks and nuisance because it has no effect on the fundamental components of our living space like air and water, and most importantly, it is rare for noise to have immediate perceptible harmful effects on health. This article describes ANSES activities in this area.

Genetically modified organisms (GMOs)

Genetically modified organisms are defined as organisms or microorganisms that have undergone transformation of their genetic material through a process other than mating and/or natural recombination. They fall within the European Union regulatory framework and are evaluated by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). EFSA offers Member States the possibility of reviewing GMO dossiers to contribute to evaluation activities. ANSES provides support to the review process in this context.Since the field of GMOs is strictly regulated and constantly changing, Member States have official laboratories that carry out surveillance and control activities including analyses, and scientific and technical monitoring. ANSES houses one of the three National Reference Laboratories (NRL) within its Plant Health Laboratory in Angers.

ANSES and environmental health

ANSES's role with regard to environmental health and safety mainly involves conducting scientific expert assessments of the risks linked to chemicals, micro-organisms and physical agents found in the water, air, soil, food and items or objects for everyday use. Thanks to its wide scope of expertise, ANSES has a comprehensive view of the various forms of exposure to which people are subjected due to their lifestyles and consumption habits, which allows it to take into account specific situations causing over-exposure (pollution peaks, for example) as well as sensitivities in specific population groups or at specific periods of life (pregnancy, foetal development, infants, the elderly, etc.).  A presentation of our missions.

Microbiological risks in food

Many microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, parasites) are able to contaminate foodstuffs and cause a variety of illnesses. Measures implemented by health authorities and practitioners have resulted in a significant reduction in the main diseases caused by food. However, recent episodes of contamination in Europe, especially related to fresh produce, call for vigilance with regard to microbial hazards. The Agency is actively involved on this topic, which was one of the priorities of its Work Programme in 2012.

Substitution of carcinogens, mutagens and reprotoxins (CMRs), the role of ANSES

Chemical substances, singly or combined in mixtures, may have various harmful effects on human health. Some of them may be carcinogenic, mutagenic or reprotoxic. In this case they are categorised as “CMRs”. In view of the hazards they present, these classified substances and mixtures are subject to restrictive regulations, particularly in the workplace.  Preventing the risks associated with CMRs in the workplace is primarily based on replacing the hazardous product with another that is not hazardous or is less harmful (substitution).Discover the role the Agency plays in this process.

Faune Sauvage Rabies

Rabies is a viral animal disease that can be transmitted to humans (also known as a zoonosis). The virus, found in the saliva of infected animals in the final phases of the disease, is generally transmitted to another animal or to a human through a bite. ANSES plays a major role in the French rabies surveillance scheme, in particular via its Nancy Laboratory For Rabies and Wildlife, which has been actively involved in rabies control efforts for 40 years. The Agency also assesses the various risks associated with rabies.

Resistance of pests to plant protection products

The mission of the Agency’s Lyon Laboratory, through its Resistance to plant protection products unit, is to study phenomena of resistance to plant protection products emerging in the main plant pests: fungi, insects and weeds.
