Veterinary medicine - ANMV

The French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV), within ANSES, is the Competent Authority in France for risk assessment and management with regard to veterinary medicinal products.

In this capacity, the Government was keen for the ANMV to strive for constant improvement of its services with a view to protecting public health as well as the health and welfare of animals.

To this end, the ANMV must enforce the current applicable legal provisions in an independent, competent and impartial manner. Click here to find out more about the Agency’s history.

The ANMV is located in Javené, near Fougères (Ille-et-Vilaine) and has 80 staff members, mainly specialised scientists.

Some veterinary medicines are toxic to raptors and scavengers

Birds of prey and other scavenging animals may accidentally be exposed to veterinary medicines when they eat the carcasses of animals that are not rendered and have therefore been left in the wild. Certain anti-inflammatories and barbiturates pose a particular risk. The French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) is calling on veterinarians and breeders to take all the necessary precautions when administering these drugs to animals liable to be consumed by scavengers after their death.

Signal detection

Regulation (EU) 2019/6 establishes an EU-wide pharmacovigilance system led by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in collaboration with Member States for all veterinary medicinal products authorised in at least one EU country. The entry into force of this Regulation on 28 January 2022 brought a change of approach to pharmacovigilance which is now based on a signal detection process. This system allows active and continuous monitoring of pharmacovigilance data in order to detect potential safety problems early. For more information

ANSES laboratories

ANSES has a network of nine reference and research laboratories located throughout France, close to industry. These laboratories operate in three main areas: animal health and welfare, food safety (chemical and microbiological) and plant health. They are internationally recognised in their respective fields of expertise: epidemiology, microbiology and antimicrobial resistance, toxins and physico-chemical contaminants. Thanks to their work in providing expertise, epidemiological monitoring, alerts and scientific and technical assistance, they play a vital role in understanding various threats and in collecting data from the network of accredited laboratories.
