Update on the assessment and authorisation of veterinary vaccines

Veterinary vaccines protect animals both individually and collectively against diseases caused by viral, bacterial or parasitic pathogens and, in the case of zoonoses, prevent the risk of transmission to humans. Their authorisation by the French Agency for Veterinary Medicinal Products (ANMV) is subject to the same strict requirements as for human vaccines. It takes account of quality, efficacy and safety criteria, for animals as well as for users and consumers of animal products.

Alimentation INCA studies

The role of food in the increased risk of certain diseases, such as cancer, obesity or cardiovascular disorders, and in their prevention, has now been established scientifically. To improve prevention of these diseases and the general health of the French population, it is essential to fully document the foods people eat and their nutritional status. To this end, ANSES carries out an Individual and national study on food consumption (INCA study) every seven years, sponsored by the Ministries of Health and Agriculture. 

The ANSES-CIQUAL food composition table

In France, the reference database for the nutritional composition of foods is managed by ANSES. A food composition table is published on the Internet via the ANSES-CIQUAL website. The table provides energy values and the fat, fatty acid, carbohydrate, sugar, protein, salt, vitamin and mineral content of more than 2800 foods representative of those consumed in France. The table is one of the most comprehensive tables of its kind in Europe.

Alimentation Diet studies: better protection for consumers

ANSES regularly conducts large-scale studies on the food consumption of the population (INCA). Their results are essential because, along with the other reference tools used by ANSES (TDS, CIQUAL, Oqali), they make it possible to assess the nutritional intakes of the population and how well their nutritional needs are being met, as well as the risks associated with the presence of chemicals in food. Based on all this information, which is compared to expert assessments in scientific studies available both for France and the rest of the world, ANSES issues its recommendations and in doing so protects consumers on a day-to-day basis.

Cranberry and urinary tract infections

The term "urinary tract infection” (UTI) covers a heterogeneous group of infections occurring more frequently in women than in men, with 40 to 50% of women having at least one UTI during their lifetime. The bacterium Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the pathogen most frequently responsible for UTIs in women 15 to 65 years of age (80% of cases). Questions have been raised repeatedly about the possibility of using cranberry and products containing it to prevent UTIs. Various risk assessment agencies have examined cranberry in the areas of both nutrition and health products. While the effectiveness of cranberry in preventing urinary tract infections has not yet been proven, ANSES is monitoring scientific developments on the subject..

Radiofrequences Radiofrequency radiation, mobile telephones and wireless technologies

Health effects of wireless communication technologies and other radiofrequency wave applications.Radiofrequency technologies and related applications have developed considerably over the past twenty years. These new technologies are likely to increase radiofrequency exposure of the general population and of users, and give rise to a wide range of questions concerning use, measurement, biological and clinical effects, epidemiology and regulations, etc. as well as a variety of concerns, mainly regarding their possible impact on health. In this context, radiofrequency waves are a major topic of interest for the Agency. To respond to the questions raised concerning use of this technology, ANSES has undertaken several expert appraisals in the area of health effects related to radiofrequency energy.

Phytopharmacovigilance

Plant protection products can present risks to human health, ecosystems and living organisms that need to be identified in order to be monitored. In this context, along with the management of marketing authorisations for plant protection products, the Act of 13 October 2014 on the future of agriculture, food and forests has entrusted ANSES with establishing a phytopharmacovigilance scheme. Its objective is to monitor the adverse effects of plant protection products available on the market, covering the contamination of environments, exposure and its impacts on living organisms and ecosystems, and phenomena of emergence of resistance. 

The European EPILOBEE programme

Faced with the need for comparable data in each country, as well as common methods for measuring bee colony mortality, ANSES was mandated to coordinate EPILOBEE, a programme for the active surveillance of bee colony mortality, co-funded by the European Commission and the Member States, and implemented in 17 Member States. For two years, a large quantity of data was collected on bee colony mortality, the presence of the main infectious and parasitic diseases, and the associated risk factors. 

Micro Ondes Microwave ovens and chemicals in food packaging

The food industry currently offers a wide range of food products designed for quick reheating in the microwave oven. In partnership with the French National Consumers Institute (INC), ANSES has conducted a study on the risks of chemical substances migrating from packaging into foods during heating. The findings have prompted ANSES to recommend that consumers carefully follow the preparation instructions on the packaging of microwaveable food products.

Authorisation, withdrawal and amendment of plant protection products: an ANSES mission since 1 July 2015

In compliance with the criteria defined by the European regulations, ANSES has been in charge of the appraisal of plant protection products, fertilisers and growing media, and adjuvants since 2006. Based on our scientific assessment of the risks and efficacy of these products, the Ministry of Agriculture issues marketing authorisations (MAs). Since 1 July 2015, in application of the French law on the future of agriculture, food and forestry of 13 October 2014, ANSES is in charge of issuing, withdrawing and amending MAs and permits for plant protection products, fertilisers and growing media, and adjuvants.
