ANSES updates its food consumption guidelines for the French population

Today, ANSES is publishing its opinions and reports on the updating of the food consumption guidelines for the French adult population. This work aimed to formulate, for the first time, consumption guidelines for the main food groups in order to meet the nutritional requirements of the adult population, while taking into account the challenges associated with the presence of certain chemical contaminants in food. The Agency's opinion has resulted in major changes with regard to the previous recommendations. This mainly concerns the greater role to be played by pulses, wholegrain cereal products, vegetables and fruits, as well as certain vegetable oils. Conversely, the Agency insists on the need to limit the consumption of meat excluding poultry, and especially of delicatessen meats (charcuterie) and sugar-sweetened beverages. Lastly, the Agency reiterates the need to reduce the levels of certain contaminants in food (organic arsenic, acrylamide, lead) and repeats its recommendation that consumers diversify their diet and the sources of supply.

Food supplements for athletes: risks for health and uncertain benefits

The national nutrivigilance scheme, managed by ANSES, collects reports of adverse effects likely to be related to the consumption of food supplements for athletes. These reports, and the widespread consumption in several sports disciplines of these types of products, which aim to develop muscle or reduce body fat, have led ANSES to draw attention to the potential health risks. Effects that are potentially serious for some users, primarily cardiovascular (tachycardia, arrhythmia and stroke) and psychological (anxiety and mood disorders), have been observed. The Agency therefore advises against the use of these food supplements by people with cardiovascular risk factors or suffering from heart disease, impaired kidney or liver function, or neuropsychiatric disorders, or by children, adolescents, and pregnant or breastfeeding women. ANSES also recommends avoiding the consumption of food supplements containing caffeine before and during any sporting activity, as well as the concomitant consumption of several food supplements, or their combined consumption with medicinal products. In addition, ANSES reiterates the need to seek advice from a healthcare professional before taking food supplements.

Smart meters: health risks unlikely

Act No. 2015-992 of 17 August 2015 on the energy transition for green growth authorises the deployment of smart meters throughout France capable of the day-to-day transmission of electricity and gas consumption readings to energy suppliers. Water distribution companies have also started upgrading their water meters. ANSES therefore carried out an expert appraisal to assess the exposure of the population to the electromagnetic fields emitted by these devices and any potential associated health effects. In the Opinion it published today, the Agency concludes that it is unlikely that exposure to electromagnetic fields emitted by smart meters, as they are currently being deployed, would generate health effects in either the short or the long term. However, it calls on the operators involved in the deployment of these new technologies to provide users with clear and easily understandable information on the way they operate.

Major update of the CIQUAL table, reference tool for the nutritional composition of foods

ANSES is today publishing the 2016 CIQUAL table, the reference tool for the nutritional composition of foods, available free of charge on the Internet. Many new data have been added. The CIQUAL table now provides a detailed nutritional profile covering 61 different constituents for the 2600 foods most widely consumed in France, and thus becomes one of the most comprehensive tables of its kind in Europe. It is also a resource that can be exploited by doctors specialising in nutrition, dieticians, researchers in nutrition and public health, and by manufacturers in the food sector.

Renewal of ANSES's ISO 9001 certification

ANSES received ISO 9001 certification in 2013, and it has just been renewed by AFNOR in accordance with the new 2015 version of the standard. This procedure supports the scientific excellence goals of the Agency's expert appraisal work, including responsive action and compliance with the requirements of independence, transparency and openness to society. For the Agency, renewal of the ISO 9001 certificate is confirmation of the dynamism of the process set in motion since its creation, and which is consistent with the priorities set down in its Goals and Performance contract.

Seven public organisations for research, expert appraisal and risk assessment in the areas of health and the environment commit to promoting openness to society in their work

ANSES, BRGM , IFSTTAR , INERIS , IRSN , IRSTEA and Santé publique France today sign a charter for openness to society. Despite their diversity, these seven public organisations all fulfil a common role in the general interest: assessment of risks in the areas of health and the environment and of methods for reducing risk, with a view to supporting decision making. Through the signing of this charter, they affirm or reaffirm their shared commitment to dialogue with the players of civil society within the context of their expert appraisal and research activities.

The Sophia Antipolis Laboratory: 40 years of research and reference activities

Since its creation, ANSES's Sophia Antipolis Laboratory has established itself as a national and international reference in bee and ruminant health. Indeed, since 1976, it has been awarded five national, European and international reference mandates for bee health and bee matrices, as well as the national reference mandate and World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reference mandate for Q fever. This year, 2016, is thus an opportunity to take stock of 40 years of reference activities dedicated to animal health. Moreover, its location at the heart of the Sophia Antipolis international technology centre, in an area boasting a dynamic beekeeping sector, helps raise the profile of the scientific community at the regional level, through research agreements and projects conducted in partnership with regional scientific centres of excellence.
