National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health: calls for research projects issued for 2019

ANSES is today issuing its annual calls for research projects as part of the National Research Programme on Environmental and Occupational Health. The 2019 edition of this programme will include two calls for projects with total funding of 8 million euros: a general one on the themes of environmental health and occupational health, which includes a budget of 2 million euros devoted to the topic of endocrine disruptors, and a second specific one on the theme of radiofrequencies and health.

Products containing metam-sodium: ANSES announces the withdrawal of marketing authorisations

Plant protection products containing metam-sodium are used in market gardening and horticulture to disinfect the soil. Following the substance's approval at European level, ANSES reassessed the dossiers and notified the industrial companies concerned of its intention to withdraw all marketing authorisations for metam-sodium products. ANSES is also taking this opportunity to reiterate the importance of phytopharmacovigilance and the requirement for professionals to report any adverse effects on humans or the environment involving a plant protection product.

Tuesday, 26 March, 2019 to Thursday, 28 March, 2019

Joint scientific conference Anses/BfR/DTUFood/NIFDS

189 rue de Bercy - Paris 12e
Public : oui
Maison de la RATP - Paris 12e
Fuelled by cost reduction of sequencing and development at an exceptional pace of algorithmic and calculation resources, the medical, agronomic and food sectors are shaken by the genomic revolution. At the initiative of four national institutions working on food safety and risk assessment in France, Denmark, Germany, and South Korea, the conference will bring together researchers, risk assessors and risk managers for an update on the impact that whole genome sequencing (WGS) approachesalready have and will have in the near future in the food safety area. The scientific presentations will cover recent developments in the WGS data-based methods used in outbreaks detections, investigations and in epidemiological surveillance. The bioinformatics methods and platforms to characterize foodborne pathogens and interpret phenotypic variations (e.g. virulence, antimicrobial resistance and persistence) will be presented, while refinement of quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) models with the implementation of the new comprehensive genomic data will be discussed. More the potential of metagenomics in the food safety field, with a special focus on virology will also be addressed. Two rounds tables with representatives of major international public health institutions to discuss actions to promote genomics approaches will close the meeting. To follow the news of the conference on social networks: #FoodSafetyWGS2019.

Sunbeds: ANSES issues a reminder of the proven risk of skin cancer

The health risks associated with exposure to artificial UV radiation from sunbeds have been well established for many years now. ANSES points out that recent data on the subject support previous assessments: there is a proven cancer risk associated with UV radiation from artificial tanning equipment. The Agency therefore recommends that the public authorities take the necessary steps to prevent people from being exposed to artificial UV radiation from sunbeds used for cosmetic purposes.

"The environment has a real impact on the risk of cancer, although it remains difficult to assess": three questions for Professor Gérard Lasfargues, Managing Director General of the Science for Expertise Division

Despite medical advances, cancer remains the leading cause of death in France. While active smoking, alcohol consumption and an unbalanced diet continue to be the main causes of cancer mortality, the environment has a real impact on the risk of cancer, although it remains difficult to assess.

Button batteries: ingestion by young children can have serious consequences

Button batteries are found in many products, including remote controls and certain toys. Serious and sometimes fatal accidents related to the ingestion of these button batteries by young children are regularly reported by the poison control centres.

Synthetic pitches: the expert assessments currently available conclude that the risks to health are negligible

In recent years, the increasing use of tyre granulates for sports pitches and playgrounds has raised concerns about their potential impact on health and the environment. ANSES has analysed the studies and expert assessments currently available on this topic and reports the main findings regarding the potential risks associated with the use or installation of synthetic pitches. The existing studies conclude that the health risks are of little concern, but point to potential risks to the environment. However, ANSES highlights uncertainties related to methodological limitations and a lack of data. The Agency is therefore indicating a number of top-priority areas of research which would consolidate the data and supplement the risk assessments already available at international level.

Seaweed consumption: remain vigilant to the risk of excess iodine intake

Over the last few years, seaweed has become increasingly common on our plates. Fresh, dried or as a food supplement, its iodine content varies and can sometimes be high. ANSES assessed the risk of excess iodine intake from the consumption of seaweed-based products. In view of the non-negligible risk of exceeding the upper limit of safe intake for iodine, the Agency advises against the consumption of seaweed and seaweed-based food supplements by certain at-risk populations, and recommends that regular consumers remain vigilant.
