Occupational diseases suffer from under-reporting and a lack of recognition. The procedures are based on occupational disease tables, some of which are obsolete in relation to current scientific knowledge and medical practice. ANSES has made several proposals with a view to making it easier to update the existing tables. As part of its expert appraisal work, it also identified some diseases not covered by the tables, which therefore need to be included in the work programmes of the occupational disease committees.

The European Commission intends to revise the recommendations on safety and efficacy claims for sunscreen products it issued to industry in 2006. Its aim is to provide consumers with better guidance when choosing and using these products. ANSES has produced an opinion in support of this revision that calls for the recommendation to be made clearer and more restrictive, in order to provide better protection for users of sunscreen products.

Classified as carcinogenic in 2012, air pollution also has proven respiratory and cardiovascular effects. Whether they are drivers or delivery riders, refuse collectors, sweepers or road maintenance operatives, workers who spend most of their time on or near roads, either outside or inside a vehicle, are particularly affected by road traffic pollution. ANSES is calling on the public authorities and occupational health professionals to take greater account of environmental pollution in the workplace in order to reduce exposure and risks.

Like all type A flu (or influenza) viruses, those causing swine flu are constantly changing. ANSES has conducted an expert appraisal on the factors involved in the introduction of these viruses into pig farms and their transmission between pigs and humans. If the virus enters a farm, there is a risk that it will mix with other influenza viruses among the pigs. Such reassortments could be a source of new viruses with panzootic or pandemic potential.

Certain work processes, including activities or working conditions, can cause cancer. How can their carcinogenicity be identified in order to better protect exposed workers? ANSES has developed a method for identifying carcinogenic processes, and used it to assess the carcinogenicity of three of them. It also drew up a priority list of processes needing expert appraisal over the coming years.

Since ANSES's last general expert appraisal on the health effects of exposure to radiofrequencies in 2013, new data have been published in numerous scientific studies. The Agency therefore undertook a revision of its expert appraisal on the carcinogenic risk from exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields. To do this, it applied an international reference method for assessing the weight of evidence to the new data. It is now submitting the corresponding draft expert appraisal report for public consultation, in order to collect any scientific comments that need to be taken into account when drafting the final version of the report. This public consultation began on 30 September 2024. The deadline, initially scheduled for 30 October, has been extended to 25 November 2024.

ANSES has carried out two specific expert appraisals on breast milk, to follow on from its study on dietary exposure of non-breastfed children under three years of age to chemical contaminants. The results show the importance of reducing exposure to chemical contaminants that accumulate in the environment and the body throughout life, and can then be found in breast milk. At the same time, ANSES confirms the beneficial effects of consuming breast milk, which may reduce the risk of overweight or certain diseases in children.

The tiger mosquito is now found in 78 départements of mainland France. Its presence increases the risk of an epidemic of dengue fever, chikungunya or Zika. In an expert appraisal published on 13 September 2024, ANSES concluded that there was a fairly high probability of such an epidemic occurring. This could have health, economic and social impacts, particularly on the healthcare and tourism sectors.

The occupations most exposed to the stinging hairs of processionary caterpillars are lumberjacks, silviculturists, forestry operators and workers maintaining or developing green spaces. These are the findings of the CheniPRO workplace study conducted by ANSES in partnership with the Agricultural Mutual Insurance Scheme (MSA). It is essential that workers wear suitable protective equipment to prevent the risks of exposure.

Following on from its work on the dietary guidelines of the French National Health and Nutrition Programme (PNNS), ANSES decided to take a closer look at the health effects of how food intake is distributed throughout the day. At the same time, it also looked at the risks associated with children not eating breakfast.
